Is it OK to use fake avatars?

Well, some people think it is not OK to use fake avatars in social media and want a real person behind the profile. Personally, I feel that people should be able to "cosplay" an avatar and pretend to have an alter ego. This is just me, but are handles a way to become another individual or not?
