My view is that you should concentrate on the very long tail keywords that most ignore. As the saying goes - one mans trash is another mans treasure. If you go after the big high traffic keywords you will end up on position 257 or something and get very little traffic.
Another saying goes like this - it is better to be a big frog in a small pond than a small frog in a big pond. This becomes very true on the internet. Aaron Wall has tips to get new web sites to rank quickly. When you are new you have few back links and getting ranked by the search engines if difficult; this is one more reason to stay away from the big high traffic keywords that are hard to do well in.
Once you are doing well with low traffic words and have mastered them you can expand to higher traffic keywords (more competitive) and move up the food chain of the net.

You are definitely right when you say that for new sites that the long tail keywords should be the main point of focus, at least initially. These keywords will be much easier to rank for as well as to maintain rank for. From my experience, some of these keywords won't require much more than to be present on your content page with a couple of internal links. Aaron Wall's tips should be useful in achieving this and are definitely a good starting point for a newbie SEO.
