There is a web site called http://www.wheresgeorge.com/ that has a list of dollar bills and where they have been.
Why is this important you might ask? Because if you have a land based "brick store" most of your customers will be from within 10 miles of your store. Few if any will travel more than 50 miles to go to a store. They may commute 50 miles to work, but when it comes time to buy they will typically choose a store that is near their house. Notice the pattern of dollar bill movement in the wheresgeorge currency tracking tool, the bill will circulate in a small town.
In contrast, with an internet based "click store" most of your customers will be from other states hundreds of miles away, but even here you will find that your small town is the US of A. More than 90% of your sales will be to the US. Yes a few sales to Canada and Europe, but few sales elsewhere.
India with 1 billion people and China with 1.3 billion will account for less than 1% of total sales. It seems that the internet turns the US into your "small town" area.
We can now optimize our website for selling to the US, by running Google adwords from 5PM EST - 11PM EST. We do not want any clicks from Midnight - 5AM as most of our customers are sleeping.
Also you can target the geographic ares from where you get your clicks. And finally we can place ads in websites that get a high percentage of their traffic from the US.
